Biofuels from biomass in biorefineries
In order to ensure the competitiveness and sustainability of the processes to produce fuel and chemicals from biomass, critical technologies need to be developed. The main objective of the EU-project “Sustainable products from economic processing of biomass in highly integrated biorefineries” SUPRABIO is to research, develop and demonstrate novel intensified unit operations that can be integrated into economic and sustainable biorefinery options for the production of second generation biofuels, intermediates and high value products, together with assessment of the outcomes to inform and enable sustainable implementation.
The contribution of IMM to SUPRABIO is in the development of microreactors so as to achieve process and engineering integration and to overcome the negative cost aspects associated with smaller scale production. IMM’s contribution is primarily focused on
- syngas conversion technologies to primarily dimethyl ether (DME) and Fischer-Tropsch derived hydrocarbons
- the conversion of lipids and mixed acids to hydrocarbons and
- the catalytic processing of polyols via the hydrolysis of biomass to liquid fuels.
