Biological and Medical Diagnostics

IMMs focus in the area of biological and medical diagnostics is the customer specific development of integrated, automated micro systems and components for:
- Medical diagnostics
- Environmental analysis
- Biological security applications
- Food quality control
- Industrial analytics and process control
Microfluidics in lab-on-a-chip or micro-total-analysis-systems
With the help of micro technology we at IMM develop efficient biomedical diagnostics systems (lab-on-a-chip or micro total analysis systems) which minimize the number of work steps, need smaller quantities of materials (e.g. reagents) and provide reliable results at the same time. These miniaturized systems allow a realtime analysis in terms of biological organisms (cells, bacteria, viruses, parasites), their building blocks or metabolites (proteins, nucleic acids, metabolites, toxins, etc.) on-site at the point of care or point of use.
We develop systems for:
- on-chip isolation and analysis of germs from solid and liquid samples,
- separation of eukaryotic cells such as human tumour vs. normal cells,
- identification and discrimination of viral, bacterial or eukaryotic organisms,
- isolation and amplification of nucleic acids in general or RNA especially
- purification of single proteins or protein mixtures of pro- or eukaryotes.
Based on our broad know-how spectrum and our substantial experience in the fields of microfluidics, sensor technologies, simulation, fabrication technologies, assembly and packaging we are one of the innovation leaders in the market.

Customer-specific systems and components
Besides the required fluidic or actuatoric components functional units for the detection of biomolecules are implemented in the chip - e.g. for the electrochemical (structured glass carrier arrays) or optical (transmission, fluorescence, chemiluminescence) detection. Exemplary some of the most important macroscopic techniques are to be mentioned here which already could be transferred into a microchip system by IMM: PCR, NA purification, magnetic beads separation, plasma generation, lysis.
Depending on the particular specifications the microsystems are realised in polymer materials, glass or silicon, in IMM's own workshops or cleanroom.
