MICROACTIVE

Automatic Detection of Disease Related Molecular Cell Activity

MicroActive was a specific targeted research project running under EU's 6th IST Framework Program. The project duration was from December 2005 until December 2008. MicroActive developed an instrument for molecular diagnostics intended for use as in the doctors' office as an alternative to a centralized laboratory. The instrument can be used to screen patients for a group of viruses, known as human papilloma virus (HPV), which is implicated in cervical cancer.

Microfluidics and biotechnology form the basis for the development. The instrument accepts a cell sample and extracts viral RNA which is subsequently amplified and detected by fluorescence in a lab-on-a-chip environment.
